Exeter 5/-. S3058, Besly C-9. An excellent example of this die combination being as good or better than the Lockett, Brooker, Pegg, Willis, Mantegazza or Nightingale pieces. It is more fully struck than any of these and quite possibly the best example available to collectors thus. Ex Alan Barr 49 (sold Rasmussen 2004 - nEF £1750). Light wear to the horseman's arm and horse's head and double struck as is normal for the larger denominations from this mint. Good very fine or slightly better. (1903)

CHARLES I Tower Mint type 1a2 i.m.Lis S2764, N2201. The obverse legend reading MAG BRI FR ET HI (common with groundline) was not represented in the Brooker collection for this type and is presumably rare. A slightly ragged flan, flat in parts and almost as struck at other points. Weight 14.46g. (0136)

EDWARD VI S2482, N1937. im.y. The emaciated bust, a rarer type of the 5 obverse die varieties. Slightly creased with obvious wear, but not very common. (1764)

CHARLES I, Oxford 1644. S2972A, Morrieson B-8. The so-called bent crown bust. Struck on a nearly square flan with good detail and some weakness in the legend arising from the shape. Ex W E Ashley, J G Brooker (937) and Prof. J Gallon (Baldwin 36 lot 85). This coin was also used by Coincraft to illustrate the type in their 2000 edition. Overweight at 6.27g. (1605)

We agree with this assessment with the caveat that the stop after the G is considerably larger than that after D and shows some structure compatible with a star - but not conclusively so. Very rare either way. Weight 0.18g. ex-Shuttlewood and Cooke. Listed in the Cooke sale as P41. (1133).

JAMES I, Harington 1b. im.Trefoil, P40, Everson 12. A nice round flan, struck slightly off-centre on the reverse. Weight 0.34g. ex-Shuttlewood and Cooke. This was listed in the Cooke sale as P39, but we believe the identification to be incorrect as the mark is clearly lobed. (1131).
