CHARLES I 1644-5 Tower Mint type 1a2 i.m.Lis S2764, N2201. The obverse legend reading MAG BRI FR ET HI (common with groundline) was not represented in the Brooker collection for this type and is presumably rare. A slightly ragged flan, flat in parts and almost as struck at other points. Weight 14.46g. Average grade....

CHARLES I 1644-5 Tower Mint type 3a3 i.m.(R) S2778, N2213. Struck on an irregular flan. A well struck horse's head and bust showing little wear to the high points. Clipped at one point, probably at the mint to reduce the weight to the correct value. The weight at 15.39g is still over, but approximately correct.

SCOTLAND JAMES VI. S5504. Evenly worn on an unclipped flan. Weight 14.59g.

JAMES I 3rd bust, i.m.Lis (1604-5). S2654, N2099. A couple small flat areas and a light A scratched in front of the bust which has some double striking. Toned. Weight 5.87g.

JAMES I 3rd bust, i.m.Rose (1605-6). S2654, N2099. Some flat areas with a weak portrait, this mark is scarcer than lis for this bust. Weight 5.73g.

JAMES I, 4th bust, i.m.Rose (1605-6). S2655, N2100. A virtually full flan, some flatness in parts, well struck in others and attractively toned on the reverse. Weight 5.37g.

JAMES I, 6th bust, i.m.Trefoil. S2668. Some weakness to the portrait. The reverse mintmark is possibly over lis. Weight 5.78g.

CHARLES I, i.m.Tun (1636-8). S2791, N2225, Sharp E3/2. Unevenly struck on a slightly clipped flan, but still about full weight. A superb portrait. Weight 6.12g.

Richard I/John, Class 4b. S1348C, N968/2. GOLDWINE ON CA. Slightly clipped and the obverse struck off centre. Weight 1.08g. THe initial mark of a 4 blob cross pommee referred to in North resembles a cross pattee on this piece.

JAMES I, Harrington 1a (Everson type 1c). im.:<, P38, Everson 15b. A rather indistinct mark which Everson assigns as P38 for this coin in his book. We agree with this assessment with the caveat that the stop after the G is considerably larger than that after D and shows some structure compatible with a star - but not conclusively so. Very rare either way. Weight 0.18g. ex-Shuttlewood and Cooke. Listed in the Cooke sale as P41. (1133).

Everson considers all mascle coins to be counterfeit. This piece having a weight of only 0.31g and a colon after ET would fall under this category despite the quality. Not listed as a forgery in the Cooke sale. Rated extremely rare by Peck. (1143).
