Windsor (1911 on)

The House of Windsor came about when George V changed his family name from Saxe-Coburg because of the German connection in World War I. His eldest son Edward abdicated rather than abandon his love, Wallis Simpson, and the crown passed to his second son who became George VI. He died in 1952 to be replaced by his daughter Elizabeth. Elizabeth II became Britain's longest serving monarch in September 2015.
